The REMEB sustainable membrane bioreactor ready for its implementation in Murcia, Spain

  • After the manufacturing and assembly of the pieces in the system by IMECA, everything is ready for its implementation in wastewater treatment plant of Aledo, Spain.

  • REMEB initiates the hydraulic and electrical tests to set it up and data on water quality and operating costs will be available shortly. 

    The REMEB partners meet once again, within their biannual meetings programme, to share some of the latest advances of the project in the different activities they are carrying out.

    On this occasion, they met in Montpellier, France, centre of the partner IMECA PROCESS, specialized in water filtration systems, which hosted the group on 30th and 31st March.

    REMEB is a project funded by the Horizon 2020 programme (GA 641998). Its objective is to develop a low-cost ceramic membrane bioreactor, one of the most advanced systems for wastewater treatment. The ceramic membranes, example of circular economy, have been manufactured with wastes from the ceramic and marble industries and from olive oil production. They will be capable of filtering wastewater for its reuse in urban and industrial fields.

    The most remarkable item of the current phase of the project is that IMECA PROCESS has already finished manufacturing the membrane bioreactor and assembled all parts of the system for its implementation at the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Aledo, Murcia. The hydraulic and electrical tests for its set-up are already being performed as well. Data on water quality and running costs will soon be available.

    In addition, as a novelty, the members of the consortium seized the meeting to present the project to key stakeholders for dissemination as the European Institute of Membranes, international reference laboratory in the field of membranes and materials processes, and SWELIA, Association of water sector professionals of the French region Occitanie, both bodies based in Montpellier.

    The consortium meetings concluded with the planning of the following project objectives and the definition of actions to be implemented in order to achieve them.

    The REMEB project, which will end in August 2018 and has the support of Castellón County Council the European network of local administrations PARTENALIA, is made up of a total of 11 partners from seven countries: FACSA as the project coordinator, the Spanish Institute for Ceramic Technology ITC-UJI, the Valencia Region Council of Chambers of Commerce, Castellón-based laboratory for research  and environmental projects IPROMA and the Wastewater Management Entity of Murcia region ESAMUR; the French engineering company IMECA Process, the consultant company from Cyprus ATLANTIS, the Norwegian company BIOWATER, the Italian ceramic research centre Centro Ceramic, the ceramic research centre in Turkey SAM and Universidad Antonio Nariño in Colombia.
