REMEB project is presented in Permea, reference international conference on research in membrane technology

  • The consortium, which brings together eleven entities and led by Facsa, has been at the fore in the three-year appointment in Prague, where the European Membrane Society (EMS) participates.

16th May 2016 – The REMEB project, which aims to develop a sustainable membrane bioreactor (MBR) from agricultural and industrial wastes for wastewater reuse, has been present at the Conference, one of the most important in this sector, by the hand of FACSA. The conference is held between 15th and 19th May in Prague, Czech Republic. This is a forum that brings together the Visegrad countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) and with the participation of the European Membrane Society (EMS).

Permea Conference, which takes place every three years, has an international reputation since it is a reference in the field of membrane technology. Its stands out  for its commitment to innovation and its works on the development of new membrane separation processes, involved in many technological processes today.

The REMEB project, which aims to develop an ecological and sustainable membrane bioreactor (MBR) to promote the reuse of urban and industrial wastewater, has been presented in this context. The MBR technology combines biological treatment with membrane processes. In the Remeb project ceramic flat-sheet membranes are used instead of organic ones. The advantage of the ceramic membranes is that they have better chemical, thermal and mechanical properties, which allows that the membranes can work under sever conditions and the application of hardest cleaning procedures. Comparing polymeric and ceramic membranes, the drawback that appears is that the cost of the latter is higher because the materials required for their manufacture are expensive (alumina, titania or zirconia oxides). The main objective of this study is to produce the membranes from agricultural and industrial wastes, such as orujillo (from olive oil production), marble dust or chamotte (from fired tile scrap).

PERMEA conference gathers the leading international experts in the areas of research and application, which provides a great framework of opportunities to exchange experiences and create new ideas in the field of science and development of ingenious proposals in this field.

The REMEB project, funded by the European Commission (GA 641 998), is coordinated by the Spanish company Sociedad de Fomento Agrícola Castellonense SA (FACSA) and has 11 partners from Spain, Italy, France, Norway, Cyprus, Turkey and Colombia, such as the Institute for Ceramic Technology – Universitat Jaume I (ITC-UJI), Investigación y Proyectos Medioambiente SL (IPROMA), the Regional Entity of Sanitation and Wastewater Treatment in the Region of Murcia (ESAMUR), the Valencia Region Council of Chambers of Commerce, the Centro Ceramico di Bologna (CENTRO CERAMICO), Imeca Process (IMECA), Biowater Technology (BIOWATER), Atlantis Consulting Cyprus (ATLANTIS), Seramik Arastirma Merkezi AS (SAM) and the Universidad Antonio Nariño (UAN).
